1. Field of the Invention
The invention relates to an electrode for an electrolytic cell. The electrode includes a substrate and a first electrode layer having a first electrode material and a second electrode layer having a second electrode material. The electrode also includes at least one current feeder arranged on the substrate and provided for supplying the electrode with current.
2. Description of the Related Art
The use of electrode coatings, which consist of, for example, doped or undoped precious metal oxides, for electric melting, evaporating or deposition processes in the field of chemical and petrochemical technology is known. DE 197 08 999 A1, for example, discloses the use of noble metals, in particular, palladium or iridium, doped with cerium, for making porous platinum cathodes for operating in an oxygen-containing atmosphere. The electrode is applied onto a substrate in a conventional manner, for example, using a chemical method or by physical spraying.
It is also known to use so-called core-shell electrodes, which consist of a core and a shell. The core has a core material and the shell has a shell material. These core-shell electrodes are used, for example, for electrochemical metallurgical processes, particularly in the electrolytic production of metals. The core material and the shell material are usually constituted by ceramics, noble metals or alloy materials.
The substrates used in these electrodes are preferably thin metal foils, thin sheets of metal or metal coatings. A problem that occurs in particular in the case of the use of noble metals is the susceptibility of these noble metals to oxidation. This leads to an irreversible loss of the current and, in some cases, to structural damage of the electrode.
